OpenAI gives ChatGPT a generative interface with GPT-6

AI · · · source (openai.com)

OpenAI is rolling GPT-6 out to everyone in ChatGPT with what it calls Intelligent UI, a shift in how answers are rendered. Instead of returning plain text, the model composes each response from text, visuals, and interactive elements, and decides how they fit the question. A comparison might come back as a side-by-side layout, a how-to might include tappable buttons or a form, and a simple question still gets a plain text reply.

The mechanism is the interesting part for builders. OpenAI says it created a library of native, streamable UI components plus a compiler that assembles the interface while the model is still generating, so the layout appears as the answer is produced rather than after. This moves generative UI from a research demo into a default surface for a very large audience: OpenAI cites more than 1.2 billion weekly ChatGPT users. Paid tiers (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise) are powered by GPT-6 Sol, while Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna. OpenAI also says it cut API prices for Sol and Luna by 50% against their earlier promotional pricing.

Because OpenAI's own pages block automated readers, these details come from OpenAI's announcement and its posts rather than independent testing, so treat the capability claims as the company's framing until people put it through real use.

Why it matters

If you design products or write for assistants, the interface is no longer yours alone to control; the model now generates charts, forms, and buttons inline. Start thinking about how your content and tools behave when an assistant decides to render them as an interactive component rather than a block of text.
