AMD buys Fei-Fei Li's World Labs to close its world-model gap
AMD is buying World Labs, the spatial intelligence startup founded by Fei-Fei Li, in a deal TechCrunch reports at $8.2 billion. The agreement is expected to close by the end of 2026, pending regulatory approval, and Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist reporting to CEO Lisa Su. Her cofounders Justin Johnson and Ben Mildenhall will keep leading the World Labs team inside AMD.
World Labs builds world models, systems that learn how physical space and objects behave rather than how text reads. Its product Marble generates simulated environments used both for entertainment and for training robots, where synthetic scenes fill in for scarce real-world data. The strategic logic sits there: robotics and autonomous systems increasingly depend on this kind of model, and AMD has lacked one to match what Nvidia offers its hardware customers. The two sides already ran a technical partnership tuning training and inference on AMD GPUs. Li frames the move as a need to get "closer to the hardware" so she can scale spatial AI.
Why it matters
This puts one of the field's most cited researchers inside a chipmaker, and it signals that world models for robotics are becoming a hardware-platform contest, not just a software one. If you build in robotics or simulation, watch whether AMD actually opens these models to its GPU ecosystem the way the announcement promises.
