AI revenue growth keeps accelerating, and that is the number to watch

AI · · · source (epoch.ai)

Epoch AI argues in "An update on AI's most important number" that the metric worth watching is not a benchmark score but the revenue run rate of the frontier labs, because it is the clearest evidence of whether AI is actually reshaping the economy. The figures are steep. OpenAI tripled its run rate from $13 billion in August 2025 to over $40 billion a year later. Anthropic went from around $9 billion at the start of 2025 to roughly $65 billion by late July 2026, more than tripling in the first quarter of 2026 alone. Combined, the two went from about $30 billion in early 2026 to $105 billion by August.

The point Epoch draws out is that the growth rate itself is climbing. The combined run rate grew about 3 times in 2024, 4.7 times in 2025, and 7.5 times so far in 2026. Sustaining hypergrowth at this absolute scale is historically unusual, which is why each quarter matters as evidence. Either the curve keeps bending upward, which would suggest AI is a genuine economic transformation rather than a well-funded experiment, or it decelerates the way maturing industries eventually do. Epoch is careful that run rate is an annualized snapshot, not booked annual revenue, so it should be read as a fast signal rather than an audited result.

Why it matters

If your job, investment, or roadmap depends on the AI boom being durable, this is the single series to track quarter by quarter. Acceleration in the growth rate, not just the level, is the evidence that demand is real, and the first quarter where that rate clearly bends down is the one that should change how you plan.
