Jeff Dean leaves Google to build an AI-run science lab

Jeff Dean is leaving Google, and he is not going alone. Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals are joining him to start Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation that wants to use AI to run scientific research at a scale humans cannot manage by hand. The idea, as TechCrunch reports, is to have AI systems initiate and iterate thousands of experiments at once, with a particular interest in recursive self-improvement: using AI to design better AI. Dean told the New York Times the bet is simple, that you get both more experiments and better ones, and that this is where breakthroughs come from.

The departure is striking because of who is walking out. Dean joined Google in 1999 as its 30th employee, built much of the search infrastructure, and shaped the Gemini program. Losing four researchers of that seniority at once is a real dent in Google's AI bench. The funding lineup is just as telling: Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures are co-leading the round, with Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed, and Doerr Capital joining, and Alphabet itself put money in, backing the people it just lost.

Why it matters

If you follow where frontier talent moves, four of Google's most senior researchers now think automated science is a better bet than staying inside a large lab. Watch whether Discovery Loop can turn parallel experimentation into results that hold up, because a working version would change how quickly new methods reach the tools you use.
